Brookings Principal Named SDACTE Admin of the Year

By: South Dakota Association of Career and Technical Education

The South Dakota Association of Career and Technical Education has announced Paul von Fischer, principal at Brookings High School and consortium and district director of career and technical education, as SDACTE Administrator of the Year.

In the time that he has been in his present position, von Fischer has increased the number of approved Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs at BHS from two to 11. He believes that one must create and maintain a culture that allows for correct placement of students as they choose post-secondary and career paths.

SDACTE says he promotes rigorous and relevant courses and utilizes Carl Perkins funds to grow and strengthen all CTE programs.

Von Fischer’s vision was instrumental in getting a recent $500,000 grant funded by the South Dakota Department of Education to update the culinary/management and the automotive maintenance areas. It will allow students to have an experience very similar to those they find in industry.

The Brookings Economic Development Corporation joins high school, university and business communities together whose goals are to grow and improve career opportunities and businesses in Brookings. Von Fischer’s role to see that this is done has grown to improve a greater understanding in the community. He is also an avid advocate and spokesperson in the community for the CTE programs in the school district.

Based on data from the regional workforce, program improvements are included in multiple career clusters, including agriculture, food, natural resources, health science, hospitality and tourism, and information technology.

This will increase the number of students with access to high-quality career and technical education programs in the Brookings area under von Fischer’s innovation.

Daktronics provided funding for the plaque and a monetary gift that von Fischer received. He now qualifies to compete for the Region V ACTE Administrator of the Year. The Region V conference will be held in Colorado Springs, Colo., on April 11-14, 2018.
