Brookings Register brings home 2018 SDNA awards

The Brookings Register was honored as one of the top small daily newspapers in the state in the 2018 South Dakota Newspaper Association Better Newspapers Contest.

SDNA’s joint convention with the North Dakota Newspaper Association was held Friday and Saturday in Medora, North Dakota, with The Brookings Register taking home the third-place prizes for both General Excellence and Best Typography and Design among daily newspapers in the under-10,000 circulation category.

Other editorial honors awarded to Register staff were:

• Best feature series, first place, Jodelle Greiner, dailies under 10,000

• Best headline writing, first place, Doug Kott, dailies under 10,000

• Best headline writing, second place, Jill Fier, dailies under 10,000

The Register’s art and advertising staff was also honored with nine awards, including five for first place. They included:

• Best newspaper promotion, first place, Nikki Brower and Billy McMacken, all dailies

• Best series ad idea, first place, Nikki Brower and Tracy Jonas, all dailies

• Best use of art service, first place, Nikki Brower and Butch Friedel, all dailies

• Best use of color, first place, Nikki Brower and Tracy Jonas, all dailies

• Most original creative idea, first place, Nikki Brower and Tracy Jonas, all dailies

• Best use of art service, second place, Nikki Brower and Tracy Jonas, all dailies

• Best multiple advertiser special section, second place, Register staff, all dailies

• Best 2×4 ad, third place, Amy Pederson and Brian Lankow, all dailies

• Best series ad idea, third place, Nikki Brower and Beverly Jensen, all dailies.
