Brookings celebrates manufacturing week

BROOKINGS – Brookings Mayor Keith Corbett has proclaimed Sept. 30 through Oct. 4 as Brookings Manufacturing Week, acknowledging the industry’s role as a key driver of the Brookings area economy.

The community is the second largest manufacturing community in the state, with the industry employing one out of every four private sector workers.

This is the seventh consecutive year that the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and communities throughout the state have been promoting manufacturing in South Dakota through a series of week-long events, concluding with National Manufacturing Day on the first Friday in October.

“The manufacturing industry is responsible for 33% of the total annual payroll in Brookings County,” said Al Heuton, executive director of Brookings Economic Development Corporation. “The economic impact of our local manufacturers is huge, and Manufacturing Week gives us the opportunity to recognize these businesses and show appreciation to the people they employ.”

BEDC is collaborating with the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce, the Brookings School District, the South Dakota Department of Labor, Lake Area Technical Institute and local employers on several events to be held during the week, including: presentations at George S. Mickelson Middle School, employer showcase at Brookings High School, manufacturing round table with the BEDC board of directors, awareness campaign and company tours.

“One of the main initiatives of these events is to highlight the variety of career opportunities within the manufacturing industry,” Heuton said. “The workforce of these companies encompasses general labor, skilled labor and professional labor with jobs including assemblers, machinists, researchers, engineers, sales and marketing professionals.”
