What is…an entrepreneur?
By Jennifer Quail, BEDC Director of Entrepreneur Support
What the heck is an entrepreneur anyway? Well according to Merriam-Webster it is a noun; “one who organizes, manages and assumes the risk of a business or enterprise”. Synonyms for entrepreneur range from administrator, executive, and businessperson to inventor, maker and producer. The title or label of entrepreneur is somewhat overarching and relatively vague in definition. As a result, it often means different things to different people.
Some may consider an entrepreneur as the person that comes up with the “great idea”. This may be true, but it is not the hard and fast rule. People can be innovative and “think up” a lot of good ideas; but if they are not acted upon, that’s all they are, just ideas. Entrepreneurs are doers, they take action and move that “great idea” (theirs or someone else’s) forward, giving it value in the process.
Entrepreneurship is not something you do because you have an idea. It’s about having the creativity to question, the strength to believe and the courage to move.” – Jordan Fliegel, American Serial Entrepreneur
