Beyond Connections created to welcome new residents
By Stacy Aesoph, BEDC Director of Workforce Development
New residents in Brookings now have a resource for meeting others in the community. Brookings Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) created a newcomer group called Beyond Connections to bring people together to welcome new residents, network and build relationships.
“In my conversations with employers and residents, I learned that there was a need for a formal group to welcome and engage new people in our community,” said Stacy Aesoph, BEDC director of workforce development and creator of Beyond Connections. “If new residents aren’t able to build relationships, they are more likely to leave. Beyond Connections provides an opportunity for them to make connections.”
The newcomer group is similar to the MeetUp concept, where people get together to socialize through a variety of activities based on their interests. Activities include social, recreational, creative and family-oriented.
Beyond Connections’ launch event will be held on January 20 from 4 – 6 p.m. at Wooden Legs Brewing. The social event is free to new residents, and community leaders are encouraged to attend. Please RSVP to Stacy at email@example.com or by calling 605-697-8103.
A family-oriented event is planned for February 11 at Cinema 8. Details on the event will be shared at a later date.
Aesoph added that Beyond Connections will also help expose new residents to current events and activities already taking place in Brookings.
“Our hope is that residents will start creating their own activities and inviting others to join through Beyond Connections,” added Aesoph. “We also welcome community members to host different events for new residents.”
