BROOKINGS – Ice cream lovers will have to wait a few months to get their Blizzard fix after Labor Day weekend.

That’s because the local Dairy Queen at 520 22nd Ave. will be closed starting Tuesday, until sometime in December for the construction of a new building on its current site.

“Brookings should be very excited about how this is going to look compared to what we have now,” Dairy Queen District Operations Supervisor Irene Zinniel said.

The current building will be demolished Thursday. If things go smoothly, Zinniel expects the store to open in December before Christmas. She said the new building will be a top-of-the-line Dairy Queen Grill & Chill restaurant that will feature a full fast-food menu and a full soft-serve menu as well as Wi-Fi.

The current building requires too much work to make a renovation a sensible option: its owners face a leaky roof, outdated interior and a parking lot in need of repairs.

But when the new building is completed, customers can look forward to a fun, new atmosphere, Zinniel said.

She added that prior to opening, the Brookings location plans to hire another 40 people. And in the meantime, current employees will still be able to work in Sioux Falls Dairy Queen locations and so remain employed.
