Happy Entrepreneurship Week!
By Jennifer Quail, BEDC Director of Entrepreneur Support

Sorry I forgot to send a card, so this blog post will have to do.  Just what is Entrepreneurship Week you ask?  Well, it is a week set aside to celebrate entrepreneurs and build awareness of their impact on our economy.

As you know entrepreneurs come in all shapes, sizes, and various business types.  These individuals have taken action and moved an idea forward; by doing so they impact growth.   This growth can be seen economically, in an improved quality of life, in personal wealth and in social change.

Entrepreneurship can change the way we live, work and play.  The product/service/innovation creates customers, these customers in turn create jobs and the conditions for a prosperous society.  Because of this rippling effect, entrepreneurial ventures have the potential to impact and benefit a broad spectrum of the economy.

This impact can be seen in new business startups, but also in how the innovation, new technology or disruptive solution supports the health and growth of existing businesses as well.  Long term sustainability means constantly seeking a competitive advantage; entrepreneurs play a vital role in businesses remaining competitive.

In 2016 BEDC assisted 80 entrepreneurs!  These individuals were at various stages of the start-up process and had a variety of business ideas.  The strength of our economy and community is directly linked to the amount of entrepreneurial activity and the presence of an environment which fosters, encourages and supports these types of ventures.

BEDC offers various events and opportunities to do just that.  One such event is the Idea Competition; this year is the 10th annual.  Of the 25 submittals, 10 finalists will “pitch” their ideas the afternoon of Tuesday, February 21st followed by an open house reception (5:00-6:30) to announce the winners.

We are also seeking entrepreneurs who would like to take part in a Pop-up Market opportunity this spring.  There will be 3 market days- March 11, April 15 and May 13; 9:00 am to noon each day in the Community Rec Center.  Please go to www.startupbrookings.com/pop-up or call our office (605) 697-8103 for more details on how to get involved in this event.

So, as you can see entrepreneurship is definitely worth celebrating in Brookings, and a week is barely enough time!
