Pop on in…
By Jennifer Quail, BEDC Director of Entrepreneur Support

Many of you did just that on Saturday at the first Brookings Pop-up Market.  We are very excited and grateful for the community support (over 200 attendees) of the local entrepreneurs and up-and-coming businesses.  The event was held at the Brookings Recreation Center (aka the Armory) from 9:00 am to noon, and there were 17 different entrepreneurs showcasing their products/services.

Pop-up Markets are happening all across the U.S. and often times are quite popular during the holiday season.  Pop-ups may occur inside another established business, within the corridors of malls or in open stores or empty lots in a downtown district.  Regardless of their location, the goal tends to be the same, a low-cost way to test the market for a business idea.  Opening a business is a huge commitment and a big leap of faith.  Pop-up markets provide an opportunity for entrepreneurs to “test the waters” so to speak before committing to leasing space or quitting a full-time job.  Based on the data gathered during these events, Pop-ups can act as a launching pad for the entrepreneur and help move the venture forward.

With so many creative and innovative people in the community, BEDC felt Brookings was a great location for a Pop-up Market.  This unique resource provided the opportunity for the entrepreneur to showcase their product, give their “pitch” and promote their idea to local residents and gain valuable feedback.  The outstanding response of the over 200 community members that attended also showcases that Brookings is a great location for a Pop-up Market; we believe in our entrepreneurs! This event is just one example of the types of programs and events hosted by BEDC in support of local entrepreneurs.

What, you missed the Pop-up Market???  Well, good news, there are two more Market dates.  BEDC will be hosting this event again April 15th and May 13th from 9:00 am to noon at the Brookings Rec. Center (Armory).  Be sure to mark your calendars and stop out, as there will be new and different entrepreneurs, products and services (20+) at each event.  If you would like to be part of the event, please register at www.enspiredgo.com/pop-up.  So… Pop On In, support local up-and-coming businesses, and Shop Local!
